Haiti at a Glance

Haiti is another country listed among the Least Developed Countries (LDC) of the World. It is the poorest country in the western hemisphere and is enlisted as an LDC. One critical element in the development of any nation is the quality of education or literacy levels that exists.

The cost of education in Haiti is very high and for the most part is highly inaccessible to the average poor person. As stated in an article entitled, ‘Education in Haiti’ which stated, “Due to weak state

  provision of education services, private and parochial schools account for about 90% of primary schools and only 65% of primary school-aged children are actually enrolled. At the secondary level, the figure drops to around 20%. Less than 35% of those who enter will complete primary school.” The report further stated that even though Haitians place a high value on education, few can afford to send their children to secondary school. In Haiti’s overall development, education remains a key obstacle to economic and social advancement.

Teach a man to fish;

and you have fed him for a lifetime.”
